I started playing music around 1986. I played bass in a "Southern Gospel" band regionally. We played every weekend. I don't remember why I joined the band or when I learned to play bass. Somehow I was just there. After the Southern Gospel thing ran it's course a few of us put together a rock and roll gospel band. It just seemed like the thing to do. Our front man was a great vocalist and overall we had a great band. I played guitar in this band and it was a fun time. Here is a tune that somehow survived from various cassette to cassette to CD to my pc. No idea where it was recorded at but I it must have been around 1988-89
Here's the beginning of a little instrumental I'm working on. Just the building blocks but I think it'll be cool. I've been wanting to write some in Major's and happy for a while. Hope this turns into something. For now we'll call it Kentucky Spring.
Always ready to go to a show we found out Derek Trucks was coming to
Lexington KY this weekend and decided to go. My wife and I along with
some friends journeyed to Busters's Billiards in Lexington today with
high expectations of a killer show and we were not disappointed.
Busters is in a new location with a newly remodeled building and
plenty of room. We arrived about 6:30 to an already formed line of
eager Trucks fans. Doors at 7 show at 8. Van Ghost a band from
Chicago was the opening act. These guys tried hard but ultimately
sounded too produced and predictable. The tunes were ok and the band
seemed to know the material but this was more of a College band than a
band for "Jam Band" fans.
Setting through there 40 minute set was ok and then Trucks came on.
From the get go Derek played his guitar like he had something to
prove. The band opened up with a driving tune and didn't slow down
for 30 minutes. DTB covered almost all of the expected tunes from
there past CD's and even showcased a few new songs and I must say
kicked butt. The band seem on and tight and even like they were
having fun. Derek's tone was top notch. It sounded a little more
"gainy" than usual but not in a bad way. He was sporting some kind of
effects pedal setting on his Super Reverb. Probably some kind of
preamp boost. nothing was touched all night so I suppose the pedal
was on the entire time.
2 1/2hrs after DTB took the stage the guys finally said there goodbyes
exiting as quickly as they came on. The crowd cheered on and everyone
left in amazement talking about the musicianship of a group of guys
that still after all these years seem to have fun and enjoy what that
do.
